TEARS ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

TEARS ON YOUR WEDDING DAY CAN BE A GOOD THING

On your wedding day, when your emotions are heightened, it’s not unusual for your feelings to bubble up and result in tears. While they aren’t the only indicator of the depth of your feelings, when they appear, it’s a sure sign that something important is taking place. Importantly, tears are not reserved just for the bride!

The Bride’s Mum & Dad

There will usually be “that moment” when the bride’s Mum and/or Dad see her on her wedding day when all the preparations to do with her appearance are complete. This is a special moment and one that often results in tears and a beautiful photo which captures the moment.

The Bride’s Entrance

When the bride appears at the end of the aisle, the anticipation of this moment can result in tears … usually on the part of the groom but, also, on the part of the bride and her parents. When you consider the lead up to each wedding … sometimes years, months or, perhaps, only weeks … a lot has happened. Countless decisions have been made and particular attention paid to even the smallest detail.

Loved Ones

When couples let me know they’d like to acknowledge loved ones who have passed, I always do this between the Welcome and the Introduction, both of which occur at the beginning of the ceremony. It’s a beautiful way to recognise the special relationships you had with those close to you and, once mentioned, I will pause for a moment and then move on to celebrating your love story!

The Vows

Although there is a period of time during the ceremony before these are said, which allows the bride and groom time to gather themselves together and draw strength from one another, it can still be emotional. After all, writing and saying your vows is such a personal thing. I encourage my couples to write “secret” vows so it’s not until they’re read out loud from the vow cards I prepare, that their partner hears them for the first time. If a few sneaky tears appear (and they’re not a prerequisite), I always tell my couples that it shows how much this moment means to them.

Speeches

While these are generally filled with bonhomie, it can be an emotional time when those who have passed or who were unable to attend your wedding are mentioned. As human beings, we rely on connections so, if tears appear, it’s a very natural thing to occur.

The thing to remember is that happy tears, or those which come when we are missing someone special in our lives, are all part of the human condition. Our vulnerabilities make us who we are and are, therefore, an important part of life. Having some tissues handy for moments like these are always a good idea and, don’t forget, your family and friends love you. They will be wishing you well and if a few tears appear, they’re just part of an amazing day in your life.
