LOVE LETTERS ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

I love the idea of exchanging love letters on your wedding day!

When is the best time to do this?

The ideal time is when you’re getting ready, at some stage before the ceremony begins. My advice is to, firstly, spend some time in the lead up to your wedding day writing your love letter so it contains all the things you want to say. If you leave it until your wedding day to put your thoughts on paper, you may feel rushed. Then, arrange for someone to collect and deliver the letters to/from you and your partner. The key is allowing yourselves enough time to read and appreciate the words.

If you feel you’re unable to exchange personal vows in front of family and friends, your love letter gives you the opportunity to remind your partner about a number of things:

  • how much they mean to you;
  • how important this day is to you; and
  • what you’re hoping your future together will be like.

If you’re the kind of person who gets emotional, a love letter  may help you to feel even more loved and supported as you anticipate seeing your partner at the end of the aisle. This is a big moment so you want to appreciate it in the best possible way.

First Look

For those having a “First Look”, someone from your wedding party could position you, for example, at the corner of a building so that you are out of sight of each other (initially) but still able to each hold one hand around the corner with the other holding your letter. After reading your letters, you can have your “First Look” and then make your way, together or separately, to the ceremony location. Here’s a link to an earlier blog post on this subject.

For those choosing not to have a “First Look”, it’s also the ideal time to connect, with words, one last time before you exchange vows.

What is the best thing?

The best thing is that a love letter is something you can treasure forever. It’s something tangible that you can read and re-read over the years to remind you of your feelings on your wedding day. Whether it’s on your anniversary, during challenging times, or when you’re going down memory lane, your love letters will be a very powerful memory in your lives.
